Three residents of Lagos – Adegoke Azeez (30), Tijani Rasaq (54) and Goodnews Sunday (26) –  have been arrested and arraigned before an Ogba Magistrate’s Court, Lagos for tampering with electricity installations belonging to Ikeja Electric.
The men were apprehended on December 21, 2017 at Oke-Ira area of Ogba, Lagos when IE officials were carrying out reconnection in the neighbourhood. The lines being reconnected had previously been disconnected over unpaid electricity bills.

The police said the offence allegedly committed by the residents was contrary to and punishable under sections 411 and 168 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.

They pleaded not guilty  and were subsequently granted bail in the sum of N50,000 each with sureties in like sum.

The court directed that they be remanded at the Kirikiri Prisons pending when they would be able to meet their bail condition.

In reaction to the case, the Ikeja Electric’s Head of Corporate Communications, Mr. Felix Ofulue, said that the company had resolved to confront fraudulent and unethical practices in its network.

“It is a crime to tamper with electrical assets and it is also a dangerous activity that could lead to loss of life and property when unqualified technicians meddle with the connections just for some paltry financial gain,” Ofulue said.
